Selkirk Mountains Grizzly Bear Capture Work in 2017

Collaring grizzlies in Selkirk Mountains: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in cooperation with Idaho Fish and Game and the U.S. Forest Service will be conducting grizzly bear capture activities on and near the Boundary Creek Wildlife Management Area during May and June of this year.

Trappers will be primarily using culvert traps to capture bears for the purpose of radio collaring several individuals. Traps will be monitored by telemetry multiple times per day to minimize the amount of time a bear is held. Signs will alert the public to trap sites; please heed the signs and do not approach to ensure human safety.

Traps sites will be signed to alert the public to the proximity of the traps.

Radio collars utilize the satellite global positioning system to record up to 12 locations per day. Radio collared bears provide a means of monitoring recovery of the Selkirk Mountains grizzly bear population by gaining information on reproduction, mortality, and mortality cause. Other information is gained regarding home range size, seasonal movements, and habitat use. Capture activities will move to higher elevations in the Selkirk Mountains as snow melt progresses.
