Do You Remember: Time to build!

| May 25, 2017 1:00 AM

Summer is a great time to get those outside projects done. Do you recognize this building? Do you know where it is? Do you know the men who are on the construction crew? If you have an answer, please email doyouremember@meadowcrk.com or call the museum. If you would like to stay anonymous, just let us know.

How soon we forget, except for Grace Schuon Leidt. Grace recognized the Ruby Motel. It has been removed these past few weeks in the name of progress. We were told not to worry, it would be recycled and live on in more than just our memories.

Lars and Anna Stonklift married in 1913 and homesteaded in the Round Prairie District. Their only daughter, Ruby, was born in 1916. The family moved to Bonners Ferry in 1942 and in 1943 Lars built a motel on the South Hill. He would name it after his daughter. Ruby Stonklift graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1934. She married Roland Maxfield and they raised their son David in Bonners Ferry. Teaching was the focus of Ruby Maxfield’s life. She lived in “her motel” for 67 years. She passed on in 2010 at the age of 94. The motel has held several different businesses since then, but now the site is ready for a new building.

We just received some pictures of “The Porthill Cannon Ball.” It appears to be a Massey combine and is currently in the Paradise Valley area. Does anyone remember this particular piece of equipment and how it got from Porthill to Paradise Valley? Would you be able to share some history with us? We would appreciate your help.
