Three Badgers earn gold, several others medal at 3A track and field meet

MIDDLETON — Bonners Ferry High School track teams traveled to Middleton for the State 3A Championships May 19 and 20. For senior Isaac Lavala, junior Jordan Young, and freshman Victoria Rae, the competition resulted in top individual honors.
In a quest that has been years in the making, Lavala broke the State 3A classification record in the pole vault with a vault of 15-02.00, earning both the gold medal as well as a place in the record books (see story below).
In the 800M, Young ran a tactical race to a personal best 2:22.35 and a silver medal, podium finish. In the 4KG shot put, Rae threw a personal record 36-00.75 for a bronze medal State showing. For the three, the results were the outcomes of a focus that extends beyond the season and into hours spent in the weight room and on the roads, running in inclement weather.
Junior Nik Bertling also made the most of his berth to the State Championships, vaulting 13-00.00, to a personal record and a fourth place medal/podium finish. Additionally, he ran a 23.92 (personal record) in the 200M prelims. The girls’ sprint medley relay team — comprised of Jill Alexander (100M), Nicole Donn (100M), Natasha Webster (200M), and Jordan Young (400M) — placed eighth with 2:00.77. Junior Emmi Müllerschön jumped 29-5.25 in the triple jump for twelfth place. Junior Joe Swanson was thirteenth in long jump with 17-09.00. Senior Zack Egge placed ninth in the 12lb shot put with a throw of 42-2.50. Senior Jill Alexander vaulted 7-06.00 for twelfth place. In the girls’ 1KG discus, Victoria Rae ended up blocking an errant disc thrown by a competitor, slightly injuring her hand. She threw 87-06, well off her personal best, and finished in thirteenth place.
Freshman Abigail Gorton competed in both 3200M and 1600M distance races. She ran 12:25.54 in the 3200M, finishing seventh, just outside of the medals. In the 1600M, she paced behind teammate Young to run a 5:47.87 and finish in 13th place. Young was seventh in the 1600M with a season best time of 5:36.5. Junior Haley Wenk scored for the Lady Badgers, placing eighth in the 4KG shot put with a throw of 33-0.25.
Badger teams placed 14th (boys, with 15 points) and thirteenth (girls, with 20 points) out of 21 teams.
Said head coach Travis Hinthorn, “We had a successful season, and we’re building, team-wise, looking toward how we might grow and develop our skills and efforts. We’re continuing our emphasis on work ethic and culture.”
