Nonprofit SPUD located at the State Line House

| November 9, 2017 12:00 AM

My name is Heidi Junkersfeld and I am an officer in the organization SPUD (Social Progress for Under Developed communities), which is a recently established non-profit located at the State Line House. The State Line House, located on the Montana-Idaho border of Highway 2, is an incredible relic, passed down through three generations.

SPUD will build a community commercial kitchen, giving members of Lincoln, Boundary and other counties the opportunity to create and legally sell delicious culinary products, such as salsa, kombucha, pickled eggs, fresh bread, ethnic dinners, etc. We will be collaborating with schools and local organizations to create programs which promote healthy options for kids and adults, as well as offering classes that retain ancestral knowledge in homesteading skills, herbal remedies, food preparation, etc.

We will also house a small-scale building supply restore, where tax deductible donations of used windows, doors, roofing tin, etc. can be salvaged and resold cheaply to our local builders for chicken coops, greenhouses, sheds, etc.

Our first fundraiser, Rocky Mountain Shangri-La, will be on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 5-10 p.m., at the State Line House. There will be locally made food, music, a raffle and a silent auction. All proceeds for this fundraiser will go toward improvements on our community kitchen! Please invite your friends! Also, if you would like to donate anything for the raffle or auction — including baked goods, hunting rifles, art, etc. — please contact Brooke Harris at spudstateline@gmail.com.

We feel that by strengthening our local economy and empowering our community to share knowledge, resources and good local food, we can co-create a change that is positive and makes us happier and healthier.

SPUD is looking for two more board members. We are seeking individuals who are committed, honest, kind, fun and intelligent and who wish to improve our region’s local economy in a healthy, sustainable fashion. We appreciate diversity in age, gender, race and spiritual affiliation.
