Volleyball wins district title
BONNERS FERRY — On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Bonners Ferry volleyball team began the district playoffs against Kellogg, topping the visiting Wildcats 25-18, 25-7 and 25-17.
In the victory, Miranda Wenk had 10 kills and three blocks for BFHS, Jerzie Pluid recorded nine kills and one block, Kadi Bateman finished with 12 assists, and Kaylee Kramer served two aces.
Winning the game against Kellogg advanced the girls into competition against Timberlake for the District Championship on Thursday, Oct. 19. The Badgers showed their determination and swept the Tigers with scores of 25-19 25-19, and 25-12, giving them the District and League Championship and punching their ticket for the state 3A tournament.
Against Timberlake, Wenk had 15 kills and three blocks, Hannah Olsen had 11 assists, and Pluid made four blocks. The trio made the all-league team for the Intermountain League along with teammate Kadi Bateman. Also against Timberlake, Jayden Bennett had 20 digs and three aces, and Micha Whittaker recorded two aces.
Coach Kendra Maas said Jadyn Bennett has stood out on the court, in her contrasting pink uniform, as the Libero. The Libero is a player that specializes in defensive skills and tends to be toward the back of the court during game play.
The Badgers begin state tournament play at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene. BFHS begins against Snake River, with the winner advancing to a 4 p.m. game against either Fruitland or Sugar-Salem. The state tournament is double-elimination, so the Badgers could play as many as three games on Friday and several more on Saturday.
