100 Year

Within a week or ten days work on the construction of a new brick building on Main street will be started, Messrs. Brody, Howe and Fry, of the Enterprise Building association, have decided to erect a one story brick building on the site now occupied by the Bonner Bakery between the Enterprise building and the City Meat Market building. With the exception of a store room 10 by 25 feet the new building will be occupied by the plant and office of the Bonners Ferry Herald.

OH. Campbell announced Friday that he had completed his contract with the county for the constructing of the new Rock Creek hill road. The new road does away with the steep and rounding grade which in the wet season has caused the miring of many cars and wagons.

Village marshal Oscar G. Bangs began the collection of the village dog taxes Wednesday. The tax for male dogs is $3 per year and for female is $5.

The following tests will be given at the I.O.O.F. hall on Thursday afternoon, September 6th, from two to three o’clock, by the pupils of Miss Lotta Glo Wallis. The parents and friends of the pupils are cordially invited to attend: Notes; time; rhythm, musical vocabulary; musical history; intervals; scales and signatures.

Arthur Zimmerman and Harry Worobec have been selected as the first men from Boundary county to go to the United States training camp at American Lake, Wash., and they will leave Bonners Ferry tomorrow on Great Northern train No. 3 for the mobilization point.

50 Year

Two of six candidates will be named the 1967 fair royalty tonight at the opening of the Boundary county fair. The king and queen were selected Wednesday at a luncheon with presidents of county organizations voting. The candidates are: Rita Eckhart, Elaine Edmunds, Karen Merrifield, Ben Anderson, Larry Owsley and Steve Oxford.

At a special meeting of the Bonners Ferry city council Tuesday night, it was announced that Davidson and Runyan Construction company, a local firm, submitted the low bid for construction of the new city sewage lagoon system and has been awarded a contract on the project. The firm’s bid was $299,561.00, somewhat higher than the $268,000.00 cost estimate of the engineers engaged by the city, Hoffmann and Fiske, Boise.

Last Friday night, a big wind blew fiery bits of the Sundance mountain forest fire this direction and started a number of spot fires between here and Sundance. As “spot” fires go, one ignited Friday at Snow creek developed into a fair-sized blaze, eventually covering about 550 acres. A smaller one, 60 acres in size, was touched off at Myrtle creek. While there was potential danger and some cause for concern, early reports going out of the area — apparently sent out nation-side by news services — told in varying accounts of actual or imminent plans to evacuate Bonners Ferry. As the man said when reading his obituary in the paper, “This report has been grossly exaggerated.”

15 Year

Eleven-year old Jacob Oxford, son of Tom & DeeDee Oxford, beat all comers at the Boundary County Fair last Thursday to take the Grand Champion ribbon for 1,283-lb. Oscar, a 1-1/2-year old Angus cross. This was Jake’s third year in 4-H and second year entering the beef category. Nice going, Jake!

Three Canadian residents are being held in the Boundary County Jail on a $500,000 bond, while a fourth has agreed to testify against them in an exchange for a bail reduction stemming from a marijuana bust Aug. 16.

Dr. Marty Becker — veterinarian, author, educator and media personality — has been named as the recipient of the prestigious 2002 Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award. Dr. Becker has made it his life’s work to promote the strength and healing power of the human-animal bond through his frequent lectures, his books, and his syndicated weekly newspaper column, “The Bond”.

Check your speed when traveling through Bonners Ferry City limits – in an effort to encourage awareness the City Police is borrowing a speed trailer from Sandpoint. Deputy Chief Rick Alonzo set the trailer up on the North Hill last week, but it will be moved into school zones and some other problem areas while it is here.
