BONNERS FERRY — With the beginning of the school season, parents and their children are once again getting back on the school schedule. Some students have participated in summer classes, while others worked on physical fitness for sports, or both fields.

For college junior, Savannah Mendenhall, she accomplished both aspects of preparation for the fall semester, and was successful with making the Dean’s List at North Idaho College (NIC) as a milestone for all her hard work and dedication.

As a cheerleader throughout her middle and high school careers, Mendenhall gained a scholarship to cheer for NIC. She had the goal to make the Dean’s List as well as participate in the extra practices throughout the season. NIC cheer squad made it to nationals and won second place by a half a point to Vincennes University at the USA Collegiate Championships 2017 in Anaheim, California this past March.

With many cheerleading options, Mendenhall chose to go to a more familiar setting at NIC. “I knew some people that have cheered there, and I knew they had made it to Nationals before, and that’s what is what I like. I like to compete,” said Mendenhall. Through her experiences, she gained the opportunity to cheer for the Spokane Wolf Pack, which is a semi-professional football team. From there, her future options appeared limitless, but due to the stress that the sport puts on the athlete’s body, she decided to hold back more on the sport and focus more on academics, still cheering when she could.

Mendenhall’s objective as a scholar is to continue to work towards the goal of being a nurse in the field of Labor and Delivery, and is still considering travel nursing, and possibly after completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Washington, a certified nurse midwife. She plans on transferring to a school in Spokane and then from there Washington State University to complete her college career.

With high goals in place to continue to perform at the top of her class, Mendenhall has all the drive she needs to accomplish everything she has set into motion at any school she chooses to attend.

“I don’t like to be idle,” Mendenhall said, and it shows with her busy schedule and accompanying accomplishments.

With goals at the forefront of the mind, and a solid plan in place, achieving the dream is always within reach, and the hard work of Mendenhall and the other deans list achievers have proven that it is possible to make dreams come true.
