100 Years Ago
A.J. Kent, Secretary of the International and Interstate Drainage Committee, received word this week from Creston, B.C. that they have completed a survey of the overflowed lands in their district. The next move towards drainage will be a treaty between the countries which will permit reclamation work in B.C. which will be of benefit to land in Idaho and be partially paid for by the U.S. Government or land owners of the affected districts. The Creston people are enthusiastic for drainage. Now that the war is over, it is certain that steps will be taken at once towards reclamation of the Kootenai Valley.
C.H. Bixler has installed an electric bread wrapper sealer in the Bonner Bakery. With this machine the bread is put up in an air-tight container that keeps it much fresher. The machine is economical and works with two electric heated plates which melt the wax bread paper so that the folds will stick together when the wax cools.
Sergeant Arthur P. Zimmerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zimmerman of this city, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in recognition of acts of extraordinary heroism in France. The Zimmermans have 2 other sons serving now- Charles in a military hospital in France recovering from a shrapnel wound and Leo, now serving on the U.S. cruiser Nahma in the Mediterranean Sea.
Influenza is on the wane. Dr. Fry reports that in the past week, there have only been 2 new cases of flu reported. A total of 538 cases were reported but local doctors know of 138 cases which were not reported. To date there have been 18 deaths resultant from the disease.

Sp 4 John Lozier, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Lozier of Bonner Ferry, is presently home on a 30-day furlough and will leave for army duty as a helicopter mechanic in Vietnam when his leave ends.
Lance Corporal Thomas L. Peterson, 19, a former Naples resident who attended high school here, was killed Nov. 24th while fighting with his Marine unit in Quang Nam, Vietnam. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Bert Peterson.
The Bonners Ferry Badgers opened the basketball season in fine fashion Tuesday night as they went to Eureka, Mont., and took a 63-43 victory. Coach Tom McAtee’s Badgers include Bob Purington, Tom Foust, Randy Sinclair, Darrel Kerby, Steve Tritt, Marc Chubb, Bob Wenibacher, Bill Sims, Mike Poston, Dale Severs, Rick White, Rick Meddock, and student managers Eric Truesdell and Kevin McNally.

The Bonners Ferry Community Orchestra invites the community to its’ Christmas Concert on Dec. 18 at Fry Auditorium. Sabira Jackson, director, will lead the orchestra in a medley of Christmas carols.
The Bonners Ferry Rotary Club presented 2 local women with “Service Above Self” awards recently for their service to the community. Tammy Hedrick and Lila Allenberg were the first recipients of these awards.
New category exemptions will allow the U.S. Forest Service to salvage much of the dead and dying timber around Myrtle Creek. This will help them complete the Mama Cascade Timber sale and make up for trees that were lost because of the fire, according to District Ranger Mike Herrin. Some roads in the area are still closed in the interest of public safety. The roads will remain closed to snowmobiling through the winter.
