BONNERS FERRY — Super 1 Foods has a Tree of Giving set up in the deli, with more than 100 ornaments labeled with gender and ages of children, for people to donate gifts.

Visitors may pick an ornament off the tree and obtain a gift, which does not have to be purchased at Super 1. Gifts with their ornament labels are due back at Super 1 Deli by Dec. 18 so there will be enough time for the volunteers to deliver the gifts to the kids before school lets out for the holiday break.

“We want to take care of families that are in need. There are a lot of families in Bonners Ferry that have kids that are in need for the holidays,” said Super 1 Foods Store Director Jeff Hamley. “We are setting aside a couple of dinners that we can provide, along with toys for the kids and things like that. We just thought that it would be nice to give back to the community and take care of those that are in need this holiday season. We are excited for it.”

The idea behind the Tree of Giving is for community members to come together and support children whose families may not have much extra money to purchase gifts for Christmas. The ornaments are unanimous for both parties involved. The activity also provides parents an opportunity to teach their young ones the spirit of Christmas giving.

“When I was a kid those trees were everywhere,” said Super 1 Foods Deli Manager Lucy Yocom. “I just remember my mom always telling us no matter how little we had we should always give what we could. It always made me really happy as a kid knowing that I could make someone else happy. I think It taught me at a young age that it’s important to think of not only your family and friends, but also to open your heart to strangers. To me that’s what makes Christmas magical.”

There hasn’t been just toy donations, but monetary ones as well. So far, the store has raised about $900 and plans to donate about $400 more. Their goal is to get into the thousands by the end of the event.

“Come on in to Super 1 for the Tree of Sharing and help the kids in need,” said Hamley.
