COEUR d’ALENE — Badger wrestlers attended the Tri-State tournament on Dec. 14 and 15 at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

The event includes top wrestlers from schools of all enrollment classifications from across the Pacific Northwest, and the Badgers who competed held their own against tough competition.

“The kids wrestled really well. We came up against some of the best kids in the northwest, and battled them,” said Kevin Campbell, BFHS assistant wrestling coach. “That’s all we can ask at a tournament like this. All six wrestlers went out and gave it their all. We are looking forward to seeing how we progress from here.”

Hundreds and hundreds of wrestlers representing 69 schools from Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington descended upon the NIC campus, including Badgers Jake Summerfield (98 pounds), Evan Barajas (113), Manuel Naccarato (138), Eli Richards (145), Kyle Smith (152) and Gabe See (195).

While five of the six won at least one match, See went on a run through the consolation bracket to battle his way back into the third place match. He won six matches at the tournament, including a sudden victory triumph over Lakeland’s Hunter Oles that put the BFHS senior in the consolation semifinals.

There, See won a tight 1-0 decision over Castle Rock’s Peyton Watts before falling to Johnny Franke of Darrington in another close decision (3-1), giving See a fourth-place trophy in the 195-pound weight class.

“Gabe See had a terrific tournament, said Campbell. “Placing at Tri-State is a big-time accomplishment. To get fourth is awesome.”

“Conrad (Garner) coached my son to a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Greg See, Gabe’s father.

As a team, the Badgers finished 30th out of 69 schools, with Mead High School of Spokane edging Post Falls for the team title.
