BONNERS FERRY — In 2016, the much anticipated Hometown Shopko opened its doors, bringing Bonners Ferry a store that provided things residents would otherwise have to drive to Sandpoint or Coeur d’Alene to purchase.

In recent months, the relatively new building was looking to be vacant as the company announced the closing of several stores.

“As we reviewed the long-term outlook on profitability, sales trends, and potential growth, we came to the difficult decision that it was necessary to close the store,” said Michelle Hansen, manager of public relations and Shopko Foundation.

Fortunately, enough people stepped up and notified the company that the store was needed in the community, causing them to re-evaluate.

“Store closings are never an easy decision, but following our announcement we received significant feedback from the community on the value of this Shopko store,” Russ Steinhorst, Shopko CEO, said. “Based on this information, and receiving financial support from our landlord we have reevaluated this store and are happy to announce we will keep this store open.”

Having the option of purchasing clothing, pet food and supplies, home care and decor items, and a wide variety of other things in one store locally has made the lives of local residents a little easier.

“I like Shopko because some items are less expensive than other places,” said local resident Sarah Biegler. “It is the only place other than Wal-Mart that carries the brand of diapers I use for my children, and without a vehicle, it is hard to get to Sandpoint.”

It may be a corporate store, but the business still supports the local economy. The stores 19 employees seem to be relieved to be able to keep their jobs. Shoppers may notice the closing sign disappearing, sales ending, and the shelves filling up once more as the store reverts back to ‘normal.’

As the holiday season quickly approaches, Shopko will continue to provide a local option to get the last minute things needed to put the final touch on the perfect holiday.
