Boundary County students give back

What are the reasons to support needy members in our community? Many ... as I will explain later. Today, with the help of Middle and High School students and staff, we delivered 228 frozen turkeys and hams to Springs of Living Water Free Methodist Church.
Alan Hinson and his son Jacob, are overseeing the Ministerial Association Christmas Basket Program which provides baskets full of food items for a good old fashion Christmas Supper. People who have signed up through Community Action are the first in line. This years the efforts to give, have out done the list of people who need — that we know of! If your cupboards are bare, you are still in luck. Just call Alan Hinson 208-597-0504 or Jacob Hinson at 208-627-3705. A time will be set for you to pick up Christmas Supper with all the fixings.
So, why do our public school students work with the Ministerial Association? Let’s look at a couple possible reasons:
1) It’s Christmas, for crying out loud!
2) Idaho State Content Standards identifies CIVICS:
Social Studies curriculum puts a strong emphasis on important and enduring ideas, events, and people that now affect students’ lives and serve as a foundation for the future. As students learn the curriculum, they should recognize their roles as related to the living history of the United States.
It is important that students develop the critical skills necessary to participate fully in our society. These skills should include the ability to acquire relevant information, organize data, develop balanced policies and arguments, construct new knowledge, and participate effectively as individuals and in groups.
Or is it as simple as a bet?
There has been a three year long running challenge between the Bonners Ferry High School Leadership Class and the Boundary County Middle School Leadership Class. Year one was dominated by our MS students; Year two the HS won due to a late donation from an undisclosed retired staff member. This tactic was questioned and debated! This year this same undisclosed retired staff member supported BCMS… once again the cry “FOUL” has been made (or should I say FOWL)!
Good thing I’m the referee! BCMS breaks the tie, bringing in 105 hams and 88 turkeys alone! Our community wins! Dare I say, we are BLESSED! A special word of thanks to our students, Bill Irwyn, David Miles, Kelly Hinthorn, Kevin Dinning, Coral Branson and the Ministerial Association! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
