100 Years Ago
Mrs. H.A. Gale, chairman of the local Red Cross auxiliary has received word that there will be no vacations this summer. There is an urgent need for more volunteers to knit wool socks- 150 pairs this month and 300 more pairs by December. Mrs. McCoy will be giving knitting lessons each Wednesday and Friday afternoon. In these times, we may not think of our own comfort but must remember that to some degree the responsibility of winning the war rests with those who stay at home.
Some weeks ago Master Edward Montgomery of Porthill, delivered to A.J. Kent the proof of having killed 67 ground squirrels. An affidavit was sent to state veterinarian, Mr. Bodle of Boise. Mr. Bodle returned the claim stating it must be at least 100 squirrel tails. The Idaho Session Laws of 1917 authorizes payment not to exceed 2 cents per head on each prairie or pocket gopher, grey gopher, ground squirrel, or prairie dog killed. Nothing is said about the number which must be killed before the bounty is paid.
Harry Dunn, his sister, Mae Dunn and Edmire Boileau were injured in a car accident near Moravia when the car Mr. Dunn was driving left the road and tipped over. They were brought to B.F. to have their broken bones set and the cuts and bruises dressed by Drs. Fry and Keller.

At a meeting at Don’s Café one evening last week Mrs. C.C. Krugel was honored with a plaque for 36 years of work in the Boundary County Red Cross Chapter, she is retiring as of June 30.
Some early day history of Bonners Ferry is reflected in the picture presented to the Bonners Ferry Free Library last Saturday. The lady in the picture being presented is Miss Mary V. Hawkins, a pioneer resident of the county, who as a member of the Bonners Ferry Readers Club was instrumental in getting the first library started.
Local students on the University of Idaho Dean’s list are Richard Foust, Gilmore Hagen, and Terry Howe in the College of Agriculture.
The Bonners Ferry Babe Ruth baseball team participated in the annual Friendship Tournament in Spokane, losing out to the Spokane Elks by a score of 6-0.

“Jimenez Homboyz” of Bonners Ferry became a Spokane Hoopfest Champion team for the first time. “Jimenez Homboyz” consisted of Jerry, Jerry Jr., Brian Jimenez, and Mark Elliston.
The Boundary County Fair Board wished to announce that the 2003 Fair will be dedicated to Caroline Kelson and Bill Hayden. Caroline has been a Fair volunteer for 24 years. During that time, she has been a General Superintendent. Bill Hayden has been a 4-H beef leader for the past six years. He was voted “4-H Leader of the Year” for 2002.
The offensive coordinator of the Bonners Ferry Badgers for the last three seasons will be calling the shots on the sidelines this season. Caleb Arceneaux will take over the reins as head football coach vacated by Ted Reynolds.
Local singing sensation Amber Copeland was one of 100 semi-finalists chosen to participate in the Disney All Star Best New Talent Award Show at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif. from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2
