BONNERS FERRY — The Swish tournament kicked off July 14, with a slam dunk, as participants from around the region came together to shoot hoops in the blistering July sun.

Put on by Bonners Ferry Parks and Recreation, the 3-on-3 tournament has been a hit for North Idaho basketball players every year.

“My kids just love basketball and so any opportunity that they can get to play they jump on,” said Kelli Ripati.

The 3-on-3 format consists of the three to four players on each team, playing three at a time on a half-court, and basically whomever gets 21 points in the allotted amount of time, usually 10 minutes, wins the match.

“It’s our first year here and it’s a lot of fun,” said Rhett Winey. “It’s a good competition, lots of fun.”

Half-court, 3-on-3 basketball will be implemented into the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, With the fast paced gameplay and the implementation of the game in this area by Gonzaga’s former guard and the executive producer of Hoopfest, Matt Santangelo, the young adults will have the tools they need to excel and maybe one day bring home Olympic gold.

The boys and girls who participated Saturday pushed themselves through the heat and the clock, showing their families, friends, and community members their heart and drive for the game.
