100 Years Ago

A new wage scale is planned for Aug. 1. for lumber workers. This scale provides for an increase in wages of about 3½ cents per hour for most classes of labor. Common laborers who have received 40½ cents per hour or $3.25 per day — will now receive 45 cents per hour or $3.60 per day. The sawyers have received 46¾ per hour or $3.75 per day and will now receive 50 cents per hour or $4 per day.

County office seekers file for the election. F.G. Chambers for Commissioner of Dist. 3; G.S. Collins for Dist. 1; James A. Welch and C.J. Wagner for Dist. 2; O.C. Wilson and S.E. Henry for Co. Attorney. There are 6 candidates for Sheriff- P.H. Callahan, A.D. Welch, and W.H. Heathershaw of the Republican ticket and J.P. Dunn, W.F. Dunning and J.A. Worley on the Democrat side. The primary election is Sept. 3rd and you must be registered to vote before that. W.C. Reid at the county court house had registered 207 as of yesterday. This number will probably be more than doubled by Election Day.

Osmond Plato arrived home Friday from Mare Island, Calif., where he is a member of the U.S. Navy. He plans to spend a few days visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Plato. Mr. Plato is the picture of good health and states the food is much better at this camp than at any other. Mr. Plato stands ready to serve but has no idea when he will get a chance to see active service.

At the time of an outbreak of diarrhea, there often is a cry of cholera. It is a false cry but the trouble needs treatment. Boil some rice and mix it with plenty of powdered chalk — an excess of this will do no harm and it will be a cure and pass off naturally.

Reuben Boileau, who is with the National Army at Camp Fremont, Calif., wrote to his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Boileau that they are drilling from day break to 5:30 p.m. in the belief they will be moving to some eastern point. It has been very warm at Camp Fremont and the thermometer has registered 110 in the shade.

Boundary County’s biggest celebration in a number of years gets underway Friday when the three day Kootenai River Days program kicks off with a round of activities for young and old alike. There will be carnival rides, a Babe Ruth tournament, logger events, rodeo parade, old time fiddlers contest, motor bike rally, and Kootenai River Raft race.

The annual tour of Boundary County experimental plots, arranged by the crop advisory committee, has been scheduled for next Wednesday, July 31 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the North Bench experimental plot adjacent to the airport. The tour will include Usher Foust’s hops, Verl Hubbard’s Redmond wheat, and nurseries.

The BFHS class of 1948 is completing plans for its 20-year reunion. The planning community is comprised of Eileen Cooper, Joyce Schuon, Jim Funkhouser, Bob Spalding, Kenneth Mendenhall and Arnold Fessler.

Riley Creek Lumber Company made it official on Tuesday when the LaClede, Idaho lumber mill and Louisiana-Pacific Corporation announced they have entered into a letter-of-intent for Riley Creek to purchase LP’s Moyie Springs and Chilco/Sandpoint saw mills.

Two Boundary County Sheriff’s deputies who allegedly checked a pair of prison inmates out of Boundary County Jail and transported them to their homes for remodeling projects and other personal chores have been disciplined.

Wednesday July 16 the Mirror Lake Ladies held their annual “Teddy Bear Tournament.” Local winners were: Flight A, 1st low gross, Gladys Garten with a 92; 1st low net, Louise Carter with a net 68 followed by 2nd low net, Marj Pinkerton with an 81.
