BONNERS FERRY — The 2018 Bull Bash at the Boundary County Fairgrounds brought cowboys, horses, and big bulls to kick up the dirt once again on June 8.
The rodeo started off with the 9B Riders Drill team followed by the flags of the USA, Canada, Idaho, and the Rotary being displayed on horseback as both Canada and USA National anthems were sung.
The Drill Team is a collection of horses and riders performing a choreographed dance, weaving in and out of each other, as well as performing patterns.
There was bull riding, team roping, and the wild pony races, with the comedy filler between by Rodeo Clown Barrel Man Donnie Landis and announcer Barney Sheridan, all of which kept the audience entertained.
The wild pony races, an event for younger cowboys and cowgirls, comprised of teams of three, had to subdue the wild little horses enough to ride them, or cling onto them, for several seconds. The winning team for the 2018 Selkirk Saddle Club Wild Pony Race was Arianna Warner, Vinney DeCaro, and Gabe Altiero.
Taking home first place in the Team Roping competition was Rick and Rabe Whitford.
For the bull riding competition, Long Go Long Go, Gerald Eash from Trego, Mont., finished his ride with a score of 86, and 100 points. Jake Davis from McCleary, Wash., kicked off with a score of 84 and 90 points, followed by Payton Fitzpatrick from Polson, Mont., finished with a score of 83 and 80 points.
For the Short Go Short Go, Payton Fitzpatrick finished with a score of 87 and 110 points, Gerald Eash got a score of 86 and 100 points, and Jake Davis finished with a score of 85 and 90 points. The following contestants each scored 10 points: Shawn Best II from Omak, Wash., Waylon Ladue from Browning, Mont., Wyatt Wilks from Hayden, Idaho, James Allen from Cutbank, Mont., and Mason Payne from Reardan. Wash.
The final average results and payouts went as follows: Gerald Eash had a score of 172, 300 points, and won $918.84; Payton Fitzpatrick had a score of 170, 270 points, and won $706.80; and Jake Davis had a score of 169, 240 points, and won $494.76.
The livestock was supplied by Wyatt Bucking Bulls, Osage Mother Buckers, and J2 Rodeo Company/Lazy HK.
There were food booths brought by various vendors, and the Beer Garden was supplied and ran by Michael and Danielle Reasoner of Mugsy’s Tavern & Grill.
From the beginning, the packed stadium joined in singing the national anthem, then cheered and laughed throughout the show, applauding the competitors whether they rode for three seconds or made it all eight.
