BONNERS FERRY — The air was filled with the smell of horses and dirt bikes as the 2018 Horsepower Collides event made marks in the dirt at the Boundary County Fairgrounds on June 16.

The Horsepower Collides event tests the power of horses against the power of dirt bikes in a timed event. The courses tested speed and agility, giving each contender, both small and large, a chance to test their abilities.

Ryan Breece won the competition on his 450 dirt bike with a time of 15.612, closely followed by Whitney LaValley on her horse Tex, with a time of 15.633.

Shanda Nagle on Loch came in third with a time of 15.947, Alexcia Jordan came in fourth with her horse Reno and a time of 15.902. Tryston Hart came in fifth place on his 300 dirt bike with the time of 15.956, Debbie Petty on Zandee came home in sixth place with the time of 16.1912, and in seventh place Caitlin Cooley on Clyde crossed the finish line with 16.1915. Kellen MacDonald on a 350 Dirt Bike left tracks with the time of 16.659, followed by Derek Dunn on his 450 Dirt Bike with the time of 16.722. Jake Jelinek on his 250 Dirt Bike finished in 10th place with the time of 17.046 followed by Jeff Dennis on a 250 Dirt Bike, with the time of 17.201, and last, but not least, Heidi Brown on Dot with the time of 18.648.

Toward the end of the adrenaline-charged show, there was an accident where a dirt bike contestant was injured during the keyhole portion of the show. Boundary Ambulance responded and the competitor was transported to the hospital for treatment. The extent of the injury is unknown at press time.

Despite the mishap, the buzzing of the dirt bikes, the pounding of hooves upon the ground, and the excitement of the crowd, once again has brought the community members together for an evening of entertainment, excitement and socialization.
