Badgers sweep Maniacs to start season

The Bonners Ferry Badgers baseball team started its 2018 season 3-0 by sweeping the Orofino Maniacs last weekend. The Badgers scored 10 or more runs in each game, and also had a combined 5-hit shutout from seniors Mason Eby and Shayne Walker.

Game 1: Bonners Ferry 12, Orofino 0

Senior Mason Eby pitched four strong innings, scattering five hits, and senior Shayne Walker tossed two hitless innings in relief as the Badgers beat the Maniacs 12-0 in 6 innings.

Senior Brady Bateman went 4-for-5 with 5 RBI while senior Will Parr was 3-for-4. Seniors Seamus Ryan and Eby both got two hits in the game and Parr and sophomore Ty Bateman both had doubles.

The Badgers scored in every inning of the game, with five runs in the 5th inning and three runs in the 6th inning to put the game away.

Game 2: Bonners Ferry 10, Orofino 5

Will Parr pitched three innings, striking out 6 batters, walking three, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. Senior Chris Sabin came in for 4 strong innings, giving up only two hits on one run as the Badgers put four runs on the board in the first and sixth inning to cruise to a 10-5 win.

Brady Bateman and Shayne Walker both had three hits while Sabin had two hits and 4 RBI in the game. Brady Bateman, Shayne Walker and Chris Sabin all had doubles in the game.

Game 3: Bonners Ferry 11, Orofino 5

The Maniacs put up 5 runs in the first two innings and the Badgers struggled early in the game but came back with 8 runs in the 6th inning to beat Orofino 11-5, thus sweeping the series.

Brady Bateman pitched two innings, giving up all 5 runs (unearned) while striking out two and walking two batters. Shayne Walker earned the win in relief with 5 great innings, striking out 7 batters and giving up only one hit the rest of the way.

The Badger hitting was led by Seth Bateman and Will Parr both getting two hits and 2 RBI each in the game. The Maniacs gave the Badgers 12 walks in the game with the majority occurring in the 6th inning.

Brady Bateman finish the weekend with 7 hits while teammates Will Parr (5 hits), Shayne Walker (4 hits) and Seamus Ryan (4 hits) also had a strong weekend.

The Badgers play the Sandpoint Bulldogs in a home doubleheader Thursday, March 29. First pitch at 3 p.m.
