4-H Friday Friends

| March 29, 2018 1:00 AM

Happy Spring everyone! Though the ground is thawing and that unreachable last day of school is becoming more and more reachable, 4-H Friday Friends is still in full swing.

We have been keeping ourselves busy through the long winter months with science experiments (building battery-powered robots out of recycled soda cans), history lessons (Greek mythology and the history of various holidays), and visiting with different community members (Sandy Steinhagen on basic first aid, veteran Ron McIlnay in November, and Edna Eby from the hospital just to name a few). Our energetic group is far from finished, however; we still have many new and exciting things to learn this spring. Along with our “regular” guests (Sheila Lavala teaching chess and Teri Neumeyer reading books) we have some other community members scheduled to volunteer their time to our youth including a member of the Boundary Volunteer Ambulance crew and possibly Smokey the Bear. We also are planning a walking field trip to the Bonners Ferry Vet Clinic on May 18, a trash pick-up day in April, an anti-bullying lesson and a pizza and root beer float party on June 8. We will also be walking in the Memorial Day parade on May 28; students are encouraged to come walk with us to help promote our wonderful program. As always, EVERYONE is welcome; our program IS NOT just for kids enrolled in 4-H. Any student from kindergarten through sixth grade is welcome to participate in our Friday activities. For more information on how to sign up, please call the extension office at 267-3235. There is one piece of information that I regretfully must share, 4-H Friday Friends will not be able to continue the program through the summer as we did last year. Our last Friday will be June 8, and we will resume on the first Friday that school is back in session. But there is a ray of hope as the regular 4-H program will be having several day-camp opportunities throughout the summer covering such things as cooking, science, technology, and all forms of outdoor adventures (dates to be announced). As with the Friday Friends program, these day camps are open to all children, not just those enrolled in 4-H. More information on that can be obtained at the extension office (6447 Kootenai St. located behind the courthouse). As far as the Friday Friends program, it is STILL never too late to sign up and join in on our fun spring activities. Just come by the Middle School on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with $12 per child and they will be welcomed like family. Have a great spring season!
