100 Years Ago

Two large consignments of booze were taken through Boundary Co. on Sunday and were captured in Bonner Co. The booze was taken from Troy, Montana in large touring cars. Sheriff Dunning had been informed of shipments and had put up a barricade on the Shavelear Hill. The booze car went through Main Street at 4 a.m. and up the hill road at a speed of about 35 mph and Sheriff Dunning’s barricades were scattered in several different directions when the car struck it. Dunning fired at the car but the driver kept right on going. The two occupants of the car unloaded and cached their booze before going to Sandpoint where they were later captured.

W.F. Kinnear will start a men’s and boy’s store here in the middle store room of his father’s, W. L. Kinnear, brick building on Main Street. Mr. Kinnear states that he feels confidant there is a demand for an exclusive men’s store in B.F. The building will soon be completed and the contractor is now putting in the fronts of the three stores. H.B. Kinnear will occupy the south store with his stock of hardware and farm implements. The north store will be the Club Cigar Store, Gust Anderson, Proprietor.

50 Years Ago

Leonard D. Lynch, Supervisory Civil Engineering Technician (engineering branch) and Roy C. Pietz, Forestry Technician (timber management) of the Bonners Ferry ranger district, retired from their positions effective April 30. Lynch is retiring after 34 years and Pietz after 32 years.

Representative Marion Davidson of Bonners Ferry, now serving his fourth term in the Idaho House of Representative, this week announced his candidacy for the first legislative district (Bonner-Boundary Counties). He is a farmer and contractor. He was in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946.

The hunter safety course, sponsored by the Boundary County Sportsmen’s Association, was completed recently at Valley View, Mt. Hall and Naples Schools.

Holly Merrifield was named this year’s Junior Miss in front of a standing room only crowd at Fry Auditorium on Saturday April 26. Megan Thompson was first runner-up and Mikkel Becker was second-runner-up.

The sudden closure of Louisiana Pacific’s Bonners Ferry Mill last Friday, that put 130 employers out of work, came as a stunning blow to a community where good-paying jobs are scarce. Low lumber prices is the contributing cause.

Pending approval from Boundary County School District trustees, BFHS will have a new principal this fall. Curt-Randall Boyer, a 44 year old principal at Mountain Valley in Rumford, Maine who was selected from a field of eight applicants, will take over the reins at BFHS.
