Boundary County Middle School is back at another school year and this has been a very positive year so far. Students and staff alike are breathing well and looking forward to another great school year of activity and learning.

Congratulations to our September Citizens of the Month who were chosen for being respectful: sixth graders Sydney Hinthorn and Brooke Petesch, seventh grader Asha Abubakari, eighth grader Maggie Bateman, and staff member Jacob Garrison. The month of October focuses on responsibility.

Our Volley for the Cure fundraiser and activities were an incredible success! We raised $532.50 to donate to local cancer organizations. BCMS supported wearing pink for one day and sold pink items to raise money. Our school was definitely very pink with the majority of students wearing something pink as well as music playing during passing time referring to the color pink. It was a full day of pink to say the least.

We also had a fundraiser at Two Tones Cafe restaurant to support the Hope House and BOCO programs. Our students helped served and entertain guests and a portion of the proceeds went to those programs. Each program received about $800!

Sports are already active and fall sports are completed. Wrestling has started for all middle school grades. A school-wide pep assembly was held recently to recognize our fall sports and other activities.

Academics are also in full term. Grades should be updated for every class at this time as mid-first quarter progress reports were sent home a week ago with students. First quarter will end on Nov. 1, with conferences scheduled for Nov. 5 and 6 from 5-8 p.m. Report cards for first quarter will be given out at conferences or mailed home Nov. 7.

Other recent events included taking part in the world wide Great Shake Out Earthquake drill on Oct. 18. The annual Band Spaghetti Feed was Oct. 23, and our choir performed at Becker Auditorium on Oct. 25, with the high school choirs.

Halloween will be acknowledged at BCMS on Wed. Oct. 31! We will have an assembly schedule with the last hour of the day reserved for activities for students who qualify with acceptable grades and behavior. Costumes will be allowed as long as they continue to meet dress codes including no covered faces/heads, no weapons, no undergarments exposed and it will be up to the discretion of the principal whether or not a costume is acceptable and appropriate.

The NIC Bonners Ferry Center will be leading college exploration activities with 8th grade students, beginning with advisory class visits in November. Follow up events are planned later in the year. The Mapping Your Future project is a grant-funded initiative sponsored by the Equinox Foundation. With this program, NIC also hopes to engage parents, teachers, and community members in supporting local youth. For more details, please contact the NIC Bonners Ferry Center at 208-267-3878, ext. 2.

Go Badgers!
