BONNERS FERRY — There is one thing Boundary County community members may agree on, and that is when support is needed, the community comes together to assist.

Father, husband, and friend Brian Ashby was recently diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. He supports his wife, four children, and one on the way as a log truck driver, but after his diagnosis, he has been unable to work.

The family reached out to the community for assistance with medical expenses, receiving the traditional support through Iron Mike’s Family Fitness Gym and various businesses around town who donated for raffle prizes.

Iron Mike’s hosted a fundraiser spin class on Oct. 27, selling a seat on a bike for $10 every hour. Owner, Mike Davis, purchased raffle items, some businesses gave him a discount, such as Far North Outfitters, who gave a discount on the mountain bike that was raffled off. Other items, such as gift cards, were donated by various local businesses.

“One of the best things you can do is spin for fundraising,” said Jennifer Wright, who attended the spin-raiser. “Spin class is awesome as it is, especially here. I am probably going to go again if they have an extra bike.”

Her husband, Chad Wright also attended the event and said, “It’s awesome. It is very fun, very fun people, and great instructors.”

There was a good turnout for the event with a full room the majority of the day, which also shows how supportive this community can be.

There will be another fundraising event for Brian Ashby in the form of a spaghetti dinner and silent auction on November 10 at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $10 a plate and are on sale at Battle Grounds Coffee, Lou’s Hair, and North Hill Tire. There is also a GoFundme page set up for him at www.gofundme.com/brianashby.
