100 Years Ago
The Spanish influenza will probably cause delay in the issuing of the county tax notices. The County Treasurer is working early and late on the books trying to make up time. Miss Freda Peterson is assisting him. Taxes are payable after the 4th Monday in November and prior to the 1st Monday in January.
Sheriff Dunning and Deputy Sheriff Fry captured 13 cases of whiskey which had been cached near the S.I. Railroad’s water tank at Deep Creek. The whisky had been carefully hidden and covered with brush and was found by reason of the tracks in the snow leading to the place. The sheriff now has about 50 cases of whiskey locked in the county jail. The whiskey will be destroyed but valises and grips found with the booze will be auctioned soon.
Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Kent received a letter from their son, Howard, in which he told of being wounded in the arm by a piece of shrapnel on Oct. 3. He wrote the letter on Oct. 24 and said he was doing fine.

O.F. Howe, jeweler and optometrist, has the New Edison phonograph for sale. Other devices merely imitate this wonderful instrument. No human ear can detect a shade of distinction between an artists’ living voice and a re-creation of it on the New Edison.

Debbie Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Holice Smith of Bonners Ferry, was crowned Bonners Ferry’s Junior Miss for 1969 at the climax of the Jaycee-sponsored pageant on Saturday evening. She has accumulated a 3.933 grade point average and hopes to enroll at the University of Idaho next fall.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 188, Bonners Ferry, took top honors at the Panhandle Council First Aid contest held at Coeur d’Alene last Saturday, winning first place in the contest in which some 16 Boy Scout troops in the council participated.

The 2003 Capital Holiday Tree visited Bonners Ferry on its’ way to Washington, D.C. The 61 foot tall Engelmann Spruce arrived with a police escort and a 4 member color guard as it was shepherded down Main Street. Two children from Idaho will go to the Capital and help the Speaker of the House flip the lights on the tree on Dec.11.
Dragnet collects 14 young men in a smuggling ring. They are charged with driving more than a ton of Canadian marijuana into the country through Boundary County and have handled at least $4.5million in cash according to federal agents. Since last Wednesday, 14 have been arrested, but the main man, Nathaniel William Norman, remains at large.
Mrs. Katz’s Thanksgiving recipe: Turkey- cook it in the oven for 5 minutes at 6 degrees- then eat with stuffing made of celery, bread , and spices cooked for 45 minutes at 7 degrees.
