Fallen firefighters to be honored
Firefighters across the nation face tremendous hazards in the performance of their duties. Sometimes those hazards result in death. Once a year, on the first Sunday in October, the nation remembers those men and women who died in the line of duty. The national ceremony is held in Maryland, but here in Bonners Ferry we have our own remembrance which follows the general content of the national observance.
This Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m., personnel from our area fire agencies will gather with citizens at the downtown Bonners Ferry fire station to pay our respects to the fallen. Various fire traditions will be upheld; the traditional bell ceremony, the reading of the line of duty death list from the past year (103 names this year), our local honor guard doing their duties, a proclamation read by Bonners Ferry’s mayor. It all ends with a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace” and “Going Home” on the bagpipes. Please plan to attend and help us honor the memory of those who have given the full measure of devotion to their communities.
