BONNERS FERRY — As Boundary County’s population grows, there are more businesses surfacing in the area. With the influx of population comes the need for residences.
People who buy an existing structure tend to remodel or add to the property or home. Those who buy property without any structures, seek to build. Both of these property owner types have something in common: they need someone to build on or improve their property.
Paul Harper has been behind the scenes around Boundary County and beyond, providing his building experience and expertise to his clients for the past two years. His company, PAH Construction, has racked up a good reputation through the local grapevine as his customers recommend him to people they know.
After an accident that left Harper injured, he found Boundary County in 2004. He bought property and began to build his home in the company of his two dogs and four cats.
“It’s just me and a couple dogs,” said Harper. “I bought an off-grid place I have been building on for a couple of years. I didn’t really go out to start a construction company, I just did work for various people and word of mouth spread. I have been pretty busy.”
Before officially starting the company, Harper helped community members with their odds and ends projects in turn, building relationships and exchanging knowledge.
“I like doing it,” said Harper. “It is mainly me, but depending on the job, I may bring in crew members.”
Harper is full of surprises, including the time he happened by someone in need of assistance that he had the means and tools to provide, then assisting in the opening of a treasure from a safe salvaged from a fire, much to its owners delight. He has a wide range of knowledge, experiences, and a friendly attitude to go with them.
Doing everything from the foundation up, Harper has shown intricate craftsmanship with wood, metal, brick, rock, and more to his customers. The things he doesn’t work on are electrical and plumbing jobs.
Harper is artful in his craftsmanship, bringing a polished finish to every aspect of the job. He is especially handy in woodwork of many types, such as a hand crafted, unique railing made of rebar, and has built everything from a cabin to a large house.
“I do a lot of decks,” said Harper, who also has built a variety of outbuildings such as dock houses, covered outdoor gathering areas, and many other projects.
Many people think of home improvements during the spring or fall, making those times of the year the busiest for those in the trade, but as the winter rears its face, the construction business may slow, but the work never stops. During the lax months, Harper spends his time working on his property and doing odds and ends things for himself and other people.
With a knowledgeable and friendly demeanor, Harper brings his best handiwork to his customers.
“We do it all, whatever you need,” said Harper.
