BONNERS FERRY — The benches were lined with spectators on both sides of the field as the Badgers football team faced off with the Newport Wildcats on Friday, Aug. 31. Key Bonners Ferry injuries and Newport’s physical play sent the Badgers to a 58-0 loss.
“We came into the game missing two of our offensive linemen that started last week, which we knew was gonna be tough,” said coach Corey Kramer.
Their absence didn’t deter the Badgers from trying their best. The crowd and cheerleaders never gave up with their encouragement for the team throughout the game.
Halfway through the first quarter, starting center Larry Hoene was injured, putting the team at an increased disadvantage.
“Newport was a good football team that came out and dominated us physically from the get-go,” said Kramer.
Some of the underclassmen stepped up to the field and filled in for their teammates.
“We will have to regroup this week, change some things around and see the extent of our injuries and go from there,” said Kramer.
With much better air quality, the team has an increased opportunity to practice outdoors and work to improve for this week’s 7 p.m. Friday home game, against Riverside.
“We should be getting some kids back from injuries and getting some more kids eligible the next couple weeks, so that will help,” said Kramer.
