BONNERS FERRY — An improved running attack helped the Bonners Ferry football team earn its first victory of the season, as the Badgers topped visiting Thompson Falls, Mont., for a 33-12 victory on Friday, Sept. 14.
“It really was a much-needed win for us,” said Coach Cory Kramer. “Offensively we were a little sloppy at times holding on to the ball. I thought our offense line did a great job opening up some big holes for our backs.”
Donavan Varelman dashed 14 yards for the team’s first touchdown, with Chris Durette’s point-after touchdown giving the Badgers seven points.
In the second quarter, Varelman scored another touchdown after a three yard sprint, but Thompson Falls blocked Durette’s kick.
In the third quarter, Aaron Scott gave the Badgers another touchdown after a three yard sprint, with the two-point conversion failing.
Toward the end of the third quarter, Ty Bateman found the end zone on a five-yard run, with the following PAT no good.
With team members coming up to par and the team smoothing out their plays, the Badgers continue to strive in order to meet their goals for the season.
“Donavan Varelman had a great game running the ball,” said Kramer. “Chris Durette had an exceptional game, returning an interception 70 yards for a touchdown, catching a key fourth-down pass and returning a kickoff back for a touchdown that would be called back due to a penalty.
“Our defense played well led by Matt Morgan and Ty Bateman who had some key tackles for losses and some big hits. We still have some things we need to fix this week but we are headed in the right direction and I’m excited to see what the second half of the season brings.”
Bonners Ferry continues nonconference play when it hosts Moscow at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21.
