Bring your dogs to Flying Heart Pet Grooming

BONNERS FERRY — After visiting with relatives and learning about the Boundary County area through family stories, as well as having friends in the region, the Jackson family decided to make the move to Boundary County. With her previous experience, Shawna Jackson noted the need for more pet groomers in the area. After speaking with friends, she found a niche and decided to fill it.

Jackson opened Flying Heart Pet grooming recently in Moyie Springs, bringing another pet grooming business to the area.

Specializing in large dog grooming, Jackson also grooms small breed dogs, but is hitting a learning curve as she is still learning the various intricate cuts asked for by owners of certain breeds. For instance, there are various haircuts for a poodle, as well as a different style for a Yorkie or Shih Tzu.

“Not that I didn’t learn the fancy cuts for the small dogs, I just didn’t get to practice them much,” said Jackson. “Because of that, I am running a special for dogs under 20 pounds in order to gain more experience in those areas.”

In the shop where she was working and training, she was given charge of the larger breeds of dogs because the older woman who she worked with could not lift the animals into the bath or onto the table. Currently, Jackson has easy access tables and tubs for large dogs consisting of stairs and lifts.

Jackson has the goal to bring a mobile grooming unit to the area, filling a need that has not been met here yet.

“The mobile grooming unit will fill a niche that this community doesn’t have,” said Jackson. “Some people can not drive to the groomer and being able to bring my services to them not only alleviates stress on the animal, but also allows me to serve those that have limited mobility.”

Jackson provides links on her Facebook page assisting pet owners with the information they need to not only assist their pet, but assist their groomer to understand what the owner wishes to be done. When people are aware of things such as blade lengths, matting, and other main focuses in pet hair care, they are more accurately able to relay their goal for the cut.

Jackson went into detail about how dangerous matting is.

“When a mat forms, it forms down on the lower end of the hair, and if nothing is done with it, it gets bigger and twists up. Once they twist all the way up, you can’t scissor or clipper those out, the flesh underneath begins to rot, and sometimes, if the matts are bad, the skin comes too, as it has begun to die and rot.”

Through their Facebook page, Jackson provides links that may assist pet owners in grooming procedures such as blade lengths, and other forms of information in order to give customers resources to be the best pet owners they can be.

“I have not only tried to make my grooming page about grooming specifically, but I have also tried to provide people information that helps them be more responsible pet owners,” said Jackson.

Beginning on the first of October, Jackson will be serving at the Selkirk Kennels on Mondays and Fridays, renting the grooming room and helping the shelter dogs. She currently works from her home in Moyie Springs.
