Bonners Ferry wrestlers place at Northwest Regional event
Bonners Ferry Wrestling Club took 11 wrestlers to the Northwest Regional Freestyle/Greco Wrestling Championships in Centralia, Wash., with wrestlers from Alaska, Washington, California, Florida, Illinois and 10 other states from around the country, plus Canada, competing for the top four places.
By placing in the top four, wrestlers automatically qualify for Cadet/U16 and Junior/U18 nationals in Fargo, N.D., in July.
Qualifying for Cadet/U16 Nationals were Eli Richards and Andrew Sandelin, who both placed third in Freestyle and fourth in Greco, Jake Summerflied placed fourth in both Freestyle and Greco and Evan Barajas placed third in Greco.
Marcus Regehr placed third in both Freestyle and Greco in the schoolboy division and Shaylynn Richards placed fourth in the middle school girl division.
Kyle Smith, Jackson Rikter, Spencer Eby, Manuel Naccarato, Austin Madden all made the trip and wrestled extremely well and bettered themselves from the year before by winning more matches, but missed placing by a match or two. However, the wrestlers who did not qualify for nationals will also have a chance to qualify again during our own USA Idaho State Wrestling tournament in Boise, in a couple of weeks.
If you have Facebook, take a look at the Bonners ferry Wrestling Club page — there are a few short videos of the boys wrestling, which are very amazing to watch.
