BONNERS FERRY — This past weekend, a group of local golfers waged a friendly, Ryder Cup-style competition with their counterparts in British Columbia in quest of the Kootenai Cup trophy.

This event, started by Steve Nelson in 1991, pairs up golfers from Creston, B.C., and Boundary County in team and individual competition.

Mirror Lake Golf course hosted this year’s event, the 28th year of competition. The first day was played at the Creston Golf Club and consisted of two-man teams of best ball. The second day was played at Mirror Lake with 12 individual rounds of match play.

In the end, Team Canada won a close competition, 9½ points to 8½ points.

Team Canada’s captain Charlie Vanderwindt noted that in his view, the Kootenai Cup is the best tournament of the year and what we all look forward to.

After the event, Team Canada was asked at the Border Crossing if they were bringing anything back, and Charlie replied, “Just the cup!”
