100 Years Ago

A military ball will be given by Boundary Post #55 of the American Legion on Saturday at the I.O.O.F. Hall. It is their ambition to have every former service man in the county to be there in uniform.

A deal has been negotiated that provides for the sale of the Fifteen Cent Store by Mrs. B.F. Payne to Messrs. Helmer and Van Gundy. The consideration is said to be in the neighborhood of $3,000. Mr. Van Gundy has conducted a store in Sandpoint for many years. Mr. Helmer is his brother-in-law and recently moved here from Colorado.

This morning the citizens of this district woke up to find the thermometer at 22 degrees below zero- colder than it had ever been before, according to many of the oldest residents.

50 Years Ago

Mrs. Harvey Pedey has been honored as the outstanding Idaho 4H alumnae for the year. She was a 4H member for eight years and has been a volunteer 4H leader for the past 2 years.

The annual Community Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13th.

Homer “Shorty” Carpenter attempted to use the emergency truck “escape” road on the north hill when the brakes on his logging truck went out. He was able to go up the steep hillside, but was unable to control the truck as it rolled back down. The truck rolled over doing a considerable amount of damage. Mr. Carpenter was unhurt.

US Air Force 1st Lieutenant James A. Burkholder has received his 3rd award of the Air Medal at PHU CAT AB, Vietnam for action in Southeast Asia. Lt. Burkholder was cited for his outstanding airmanship and courage as an F-4 Phantom fighter bomber pilot.

This year’s basketball season has been educational for the Badger’s varsity team. So far the boys haven’t won a game, but they have one of the toughest schedules in the league.

One of Bonners Ferry’s most beautiful traditions is the annual Christmas concert by the Bonners Ferry Community Choir. This year 80 adults and 50 children raise their voices in song.

Valley View second graders in Deborah Davis’ class chose to give to the needy rather than have a party for themselves. They raised more than $124 selling hot chocolate and cookies. They will use the money to buy Christmas presents for Care n’ Share.
