Dixie LaDonna Poston-Whallon

Dixie LaDonna Poston-Whallon passed away Dec. 1, 2019 in Spokane, Wash. Born in Bonners Ferry on Jan. 21, 1947, to Maxine Gross-Poston and Charlie Poston, Dixie was a lifelong resident of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She had just recently moved to Spokane in October to be closer to her children.

Dixie grew up in Bonners Ferry with too many aunts, uncles and cousins to name. She was always so happy whenever she spoke about her childhood. After graduating from high school Dixie moved to Portland, Ore. She attended a year of college and then met and married her husband, Larry R. Whallon. When Larry joined the service, Dixie was fortunate to be able to join him where he was stationed and was able to experience living in Europe and several different parts of the United States. They moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where their daughter Shawnna Whallon-Vanderberg was born. Then to Paso Robles, Calif., where their son Christopher Whallon was born.

In 1974 Dixie and her children returned to Bonners Ferry where she raised her children and became a very active member of Beta Sigma Phi. She worked at Canadian Chains for several years and then went to work for the Hiatts’ at their automobile dealership. She worked there for 34 years and retired in 2013. During this time, she also had a small catering business, which combined two of her favorite things, cooking and parties!

However, what she loved most was being a grandma to her five grandchildren. She did not miss an event that any of them were involved in. You would see her at all the games, which took her back and forth from Bonners Ferry for Robby and Jenna Gust to Spokane for Nick, Chase and McKenzie Whallon.

Dixie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a very loving and giving person, with a great sense of humor.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father and her grandson, Rob Gust, III.

She is survived by her children Shawnna Whallon-Vanderberg (husband Shawn), Christopher Whallon (wife Casey) and grandchildren Jenna Gust, Nick, McKenzie, Chase Whallon, and great-grandson Everett James. Also her siblings Terrie Dickerson (Bonners Ferry, Idaho), Becky Lungren (husband Dave, Chicago, Ill.), Kenny Poston (wife Penny, Davis, Calif.); several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Dixie this spring.

If anyone would like to make any donations in memory of Dixie they can make them to Beta Sigma Phi, C/O Ruth Ann Wilson, P.O. Box 1011, Bonners Ferry, ID 83805. She was always very proud to be a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the help they provided to the community.
