BONNERS FERRY — The recount has been completed and votes confirm that challenger Dick Staples has in fact won the Bonners Ferry mayoral race.

On Nov. 19, candidates for the mayoral election received a letter from Glenda Poston of the Boundary County clerk’s office. Poston advised candidates of an issue regarding possible ineligible votes considering that challenger Dick Staples won the election by only two votes over incumbent David Sims.

Sims had made a request to the Attorney General’s office for a manual recount which was scheduled to occur in the first or second week of December. The repeat tabulation of the votes cast, determined that the initial count was correct and that Dick Staples is the new mayor of Bonners Ferry.

The Boundary County Elections Department has confirmed on Dec. 17, that the recount of votes shows the same results.

The Elections representative said that the office has not heard anything further from Sims on the matter at this time. Staples will be sworn in as the Mayor of Bonners Ferry on Jan. 7.
