BONNERS FERRY — The Badger cheerleaders competed in the Prairie Classic at Lakeland High School on Saturday, Feb. 2, earning first place in Sideline Cheer and All Girl Stunt Group, and second place in Sideline Cheer and All Girl Show.

Being a small team of five girls, they had to work extra hard against the larger teams in the competition, said coach Andria Hedrick.

“As you can imagine, with those sort of numbers, it can be intimidating to stand out on that mat with only five members on our team,” Hedrick said. “The judges made comments such as ‘Good Smiles!’, ‘Nice Kicks’, ‘Fun poms in Cheer’, ‘Great use of small numbers’,’Nice assisted extension’.”

Even the mistakes made can be seen as a positive on the score sheets. They judge the team on their recoveries, whether they smile through the mistake or give up on the whole routine.

“Although small mistakes were made, we earned points because the Badger Cheerleaders smile through and push on to finish the routine,” said Hedrick.

The girls came home with pointers on things to work on for the next competition, but they continue to smile and show their Badger spirit through their hard work.

“Before our next competition, we will be modifying some of our routines per the judge’s suggestions,” said Hedrick. “Small changes such as pointing their toes during stunts and jumps, and extending our stunts to the next level, can make a world of a difference at competition. The judges see potential in the team and are eager to see them succeed just as we do.”
