Buy a treat, help area cats and dogs
BONNERS FERRY — The friends are at it again, and all for the love of cats and dogs. Cheryl Britton — also known affectionately as “the culprit”, because she is the one who introduced the friends to each other — has spearheaded the second annual Valentine’s Day Charity Bake Sale to benefit Second Chance Animal Adoption.
Last year’s bake sale earned $1,400 for the local animal shelter.
“We weren’t even organized last year … and look what we did,” said Britton.
This year’s sale will be held at Super 1 Foods on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. until the goods are sold. Along with the baked goodies, they will also have raffles and “guess how many are in the jar” games.
“This year we have a collector’s knife,” said Britton. “It is a Kershaw Golden Bear knife in a wooden collector’s case.”
Following the success of last year, many businesses have stepped up to help the ladies reach their goals by donating to the cause.
“This is getting way bigger than before,” said Britton.
Individuals are also pitching in to help. Although the ladies do most of the baking themselves, some people have offered to help.
“We got one lady that called me from Florida that lives in Naples, and is bringing jelly rolls,’ said Britton. “She’ll be back by the bake sale and she will be bringing jelly rolls.”
Every dollar earned goes to benefit Second Chance. In addition, they will be accepting donations of dog and cat food and supplies during the bake sale. They will also have baskets made up that they hope children can afford to buy for their mom.
“Just some little different things than we had before,” said Britton.
They are hoping that this year will be even more successful than last.
“I think Second Chance can use it this year because they are redoing the kitten room,” said Britton. “It is closed right now, but they are working on it. They have it all fresh painted but they need an air filtration system.”
“If that is what the money goes for, that would be great,” she explained. “Whatever they need to use it for, as long as it goes for the dogs and the cats. That is what we do it for — the dogs and the cats.”
