100 Years Ago

A.N. Fiske, well known resident of Meadow Creek, was killed while hauling ties, one of the ties slewing off the load and knocking him under the sleigh. He was killed instantly.

The new cemetery site is chosen by the committee. They decided to secure the site offered by W.H. Richardson, which is located on the south bench and contains 21- 23 acres. The land was offered at $1500. Lots will be sold for $25 each and all money received will be used to pay off indebtedness and keeping the grounds in repair.

Officials of Lincoln Co., Montana and Boundary Co. met to discuss a new bridge at Lenia. It was stated that some help would be available from the forestry dept and from the residents of Lenia, who claim there is $30,000 worth of timber already cut if they can get it to the railroad and hundreds of thousands more waiting to be cut if they can get it to the Great Northern Railway.

Seen and Heard: Lennis Gross coming home for lunch at 10 am, thinking it was 11 am and Nolda not knowing the difference.

Argument ensued over the groundhog seeing his shadow – so maybe we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter or maybe not!

Fred Hatfield of B.F. captured his second straight Golden Glove championship in Portland last weekend with 2 smashing knockouts. Fred was joined in the winner’s circle by teammate, Norm Leach, who also won a championship.

The National Guard was sent to Boundary County on Monday to help with snow removal. Three 5 ton dump trucks and a Caterpillar with a blade were dispatched by Gov. Don W. Samuelson.

Robert E. Hayden, 64, is being held on $100,000 bond for allegedly intimidating Ponderay Wal-Mart employee, Juan Gonzales, who says Hayden purchased a “milk house” heater and white paint. He allegedly used the materials to help Warren Zamitalo burn down his double-wide trailer in Naples.

Gloria White was accused of harboring her son, Jade Burn, who was wanted on multiple rape and burglary charges in Oregon. A plea agreement reduced the charge to obstructing an officer. The sentence was reduced from 30 days to 15 days already served.

Valley View fifth grader Aaron Moe is a Kiwanis Hoop Shoot star who won first-place victories for free throws in Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint, and Kellogg. He took fourth place last Saturday during the state competition in Boise after sinking 17 of 25 baskets.
