We are already one month into the second semester! Things will start to slow down a bit from here as we hit the long stretch prior to spring break. Seems weird to be speaking about spring with the recent winter arrival (finally) but that is the next major step in our year. Third quarter will end the last day before spring break and before you know it we will be finalizing the year.
Every month BCMS recognizes folks who display a monthly trait with a citizenship award. January’s winners for displaying the trait of fairness were: sixth grader Lucas Edwards, seventh grader Hope DeFalco, eighth graders Cleo Henslee and Bianca Dally, and staff member Sara Knaggs.
January and February has been the busiest of the year for our school. Basketball season always fills the schedule. We ended on high notes by hosting our 70th annual eighth grade basketball tournament! We appreciate all the help from our community to make this a successful event for Bonners Ferry. Our girls won a hard fought game over Lakeland to end their season with a third place finish. Our boys outlasted a host of fantastic teams including Sandpoint in the finals to win the championship! It was great to see the stands full of supportive community members and the atmosphere was fantastic.
We also recently had our spelling and geography bees where students competed for the chance to move on to the next rounds. Roger Naylor held on to win the geography bee in a close final round against Henry Willis. Our spellers overcame extremely difficult words to crown Tyler Stockdale, Ana Chase, and Max Callahan-Winkler as our grade level champions.
We also had a student led Pep Assembly this last Thursday. It was full of fun and games as well as recognition of our sports and robotics teams. The students were well prepared for cheering on our teams at the tournament.
Now we enter a little lull before we get back to busy times. We will be enjoying our ski days soon with eighth grade skiing on Wednesday, Feb. 27, seventh grade on Wednesday, March 6, and sixth grade on Wednesday, March 13.
Middle School Track will begin on Monday March 18, but there will not be practice during the next two Thursdays, March 21 and 28.
The NIC Bonners Ferry Center will be leading college exploration activities with eighth grade students, beginning with advisory class visits in November. Follow up events are planned later in the year. The Mapping Your Future project is a grant-funded initiative sponsored by the Equinox Foundation. With this program, NIC also hopes to engage parents, teachers, and community members in supporting local youth. For more details, please contact the NIC Bonners Ferry Center at 208.267.3878, ext. 2.
We have also just been awarded a Gear Up grant which will be used to help our seventh grade students explore future options for both college and careers. Next year the grant will affect both seventh and eighth graders and follow both classes through high school. Events and activities associated with this grant are still being worked out so stay tuned.
