Middle school boys champions once again

| February 28, 2019 12:00 AM

During the past 70 years the great people of Bonners Ferry have hosted the annual middle school basketball tournament for the region. This year was no different with nine boys’ teams from around the area participating.

There was some really good basketball and a lot of excitement throughout the day with all teams playing three games each.

The tournament was intense and enjoyable to watch. The final two unbeaten teams, Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, found themselves playing for the championship. The game was hard fought until the buzzer with great hustle plays on both ends and big shots down the stretch. Bonners Ferry was down 34-32 late in the game and then dug deep and pulled off the victory, 48-37.

For the first time since 2006 the eighth grade boys’ basketball team has won the Bonners Ferry basketball tournament and ended their two year middle school career with a 20-1 overall record.

Coach Nathan Williams stated, “It has been an honor to coach such hard-working and unselfish young men the past couple years. I’m very proud of this team and how they strive to improve every possession in practice or in a game setting.”

A big thank you to the many people who made this tournament happen not just this year, but throughout the years. It is unselfish people like this that make this tournament a success every year and provide some wonderful memories for the players and fans.
