Darrell Boyd Brown

Darrell Boyd Brown passed from this earth into God’s arms on Jan. 11, 2019, after a long and painful journey. He will be sorely missed by his many family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kyle Bostock from North Summit Church officiating. Calling hours will be from 1-6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, at Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. Interment will take place in Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Darrell was born on May 1, 1936, to Virgil and Rosetta (Claybaugh) Brown in Kootenai, Idaho. He was the youngest of 10 surviving children and was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Darrell attended grade school in Kootenai and graduated from Sandpoint Senior High School in 1954. While in senior high he met his wife, Ellena Poelstra, whom he married. Darrell worked at Carter Service Center after graduating for a year after marrying. Darrell and Ellena moved to Warm Springs, Ore., where he worked for the Warm Springs Lumber Company mill. While in Oregon their first son Richard Dale was born. Four months later they moved back to Sandpoint where he was employed by Arrow Tie Mill; of which he helped build with Larry Donnerberg and was employed for 28 years. During that time he became a proud Dad to Linda Lorraine, Judith Darlene and Douglas Darrell. These children were born on the farm in Selle; delivered by Dr. Mary O’mara-Pepper.

Darrell was a “workaholic”; he was never without a job and usually had more than one job at a time, while also working the farm. He and his family lived on a farm in Selle for more than 15 years. They then moved to North Boyer Avenue next to the Fairgrounds for another 20 years. At which time he purchased his first two log trucks; and then two brand new Peterbilts of which he and B.J. Balison operated. It was the job he most enjoyed throughout his life; he loved to drive.

Darrell and Ellena then purchased their current home on Mtn. View Road which is currently Gooby Road. Due to health issues Darrell was forced into early retirement for the “log trucks.” And Brown’s Northside Machine and Gear was born. We have currently been in business for 29 years; with his children now at the helm.

Darrell and Ellena have been married for 64 wonderful years. Darrell loved his motorhome and boat; they enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with his brothers for many years. Darrell enjoyed farming; especially when he got his brand new John Deere Tractor — it was quite the step up from the “old Ford.”

He also loved his antique cars; they were members of the Injectors Car Club for years. His collection includes: ’65 Mustang convertible, ’56 T-bird w/hardtop, ‘56 Chevy big window and ‘55 Ford F150. They are his pride and joy; and are snugly tucked in as Poppa would have wanted.

Darrell was preceded in death by his brothers Elmer, Bob, Lyle, Bill, Dewayne and Dale (who lost his life in the Philippines during World War II).

Sisters were Irene (Ritele), Marian (Harrington), Gladys (Grant) and Margaret (Montgomery), Great grandsons’ Dakota Rogers and Angel baby Brodee Stevens.

Darrell is survived by his wife Ellena and children Richard Dale (Debra), Linda Lorraine (Gary) Vanhorn, Judith Darlene (Randy) Stevens, and Douglas Darrell (Jennifer) all of Sandpoint, Idaho. Nine grandsons: Eric Brown (Faith), Jeremy Brown (Dannielle), Jason Brown (Debin) of Mississippi, Andy Brown, Brian Brown (Mary) of Boise, Kevin Brown (Brittany), Nicholas Stevens (Malissa), Brandon Brown (Teal), Lee Vanhorn (Melody) of Naples, and two granddaughters Ashley Kruger (Hunter) and Courtney Lam (Alvar) of New Jersey. Many, many nieces and nephews.

Great-grandchildren: Mikal, Joseph, Isaac, Evan, James, Brant, Cole, Ayianna, Kinsley, Hayden, Sidney, Jesse, Keeley, Kaadence, Viviann and Ava Sue.

And was Poppa 2 to great-grandson Matthew Brown.

Poppa was all about “family” — he was the best husband, father, brother, grandpa and Poppa any person could have asked for and will be missed so very much.
