Pirates on the Kootenai River?

BONNERS FERRY — The time when members of the community come together and plunge into the icy waters of the Kootenai River is fast approaching, and this year promises to be even more fun.

The annual Penguin Plunge will take place on Saturday, March 9, at the Waterways boat launch just west of the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Registration will be open at 11 a.m., with the plunge at noon into the Kootenai River.

“This will be a plunge to participate in or be a supporter/spectator as the planning group has some fun in mind making this year unique,” said Boundary County Public Information Officer Mike Meier. “This year it is a pirate theme, and we even have a pirate ship that normally has been spotted on the waters of lake Pend Oreille showing up, to check out the bounty of the Kootenai River.”

Meier hinted that there may even be a cannon and a plank to walk for those brave enough.

“The planning is still in the process to make the event even more fun and a success,” said Meier.

North Idaho Spas will be providing a hot tub for the plungers to warm up in after walking the plank, or plunging off the dock. Chili dogs, hot coffee, and hot chocolate will be provided by Helping Hands of Naples. There will also be several items available via silent auction.

To keep everyone safe, Boundary Search and Dive Rescue and the Sheriff’s marine boat will be on hand.

All the freezing fun will help to benefit Special Olympics Idaho.

- Special Olympics Idaho is a non-profit organization that provides training and athletic competitions year-round, free of charge, to all with intellectual disabilities throughout the state.

Since 1981 law enforcement officers from around the world have helped raise awareness and funds to support Special Olympics through events like this Penguin Plunge “freezing for a reason.” Since 1981 law enforcement officers have raised more than $600 million to help the Special Olympic Athletes and are considered the “Guardians of the Flame” for the athletes.

All money raised from this event will go directly to Special Olympics Idaho. Organizers hope residents start practicing their pirate talk, and plan to participate as a team or individual for a chance to win some great prizes for best costume, team spirit, individual spirit, judges’ choice and most money raised.
