Wrestling wins dual meets; has success at 'Rumble'
BONNERS FERRY — On Jan. 22, the Badger wrestlers faced off against Libby/Troy at the Bonners Ferry High School gym, winning the dual meet 48-24.
On Jan. 24, the team faced off against American Falls, winning 42-40.
“We picked up two big dual wins against American Falls,” said assistant coach Kevin Campbell. “We had kids pick up some important bonus-point wins to lead us to a 2 point victory. In a dual that close every point counts, and our kids got those bonus points.”
The Badgers then squared off against Kellogg, coming out on top again 54-30.
“We beat Kellogg pretty soundly. We almost have our full lineup, and beating Kellogg 54-30 shows how dangerous we can be when we have everyone healthy,” said Campbell. “This win sets the stage for our home dual against Timberlake on Feb. 8 when we wrestle for the league title. We need Bonners Ferry and Boundary County to come out that night and give us a big, loud, rowdy crowd.”
Rounding out their busy week, the wrestlers went to North Idaho Rumble on Jan. 25 and 26 at Coeur d’Alene High School.
Evan Barajas (113) placed first, Gabe See (195) placed second, Manuel Naccarato (138) placed fourth, Jake Summerfield (98) placed fifth, and Eli Richards (145) placed sixth at the weekend tournament.
“We were super pleased with our efforts in CDA,” said Campbell. “This tournament features every wrestling team in North Idaho from Lewiston to Bonners Ferry, plus a few tough southern Idaho teams. It is a great litmus test to see where we are competitively. And we came out alright.”
Evan Barajas went on an absolute tear through his bracket on the way to first place. He allowed four points all tournament, and those were him letting his opponent up, Campbell said. No one earned a point on him.
“Gabe See lost a tough match in the finals 1-0. We just need to find a way to score that point and give him a chance to win in overtime (OT). We get to OT and I really liked his chances to get the win. Manuel Naccarato was fourth, Jake Summerfield and Eli Richards were both sixth, and had some really good moments in the tournament.”
Even though Kyle Smith didn’t place, he had a good tournament for being in a pigtail match in a tough bracket.
“Usually three wins gets you on the medal stand,” said Campbell. “Unfortunately for Kyle, it would have taken four, and he came up just short. But he wrestled well and we saw a lot of good things from him.”
This weekend the Badgers host the Bonners Ferry Invitational tournament. Duals are on Friday night, Feb. 1, and the tournament is all day Saturday, Feb. 2. The Badger wrestlers encourage the community to attend and cheer them on.
