9B Arenacross revs up riders
BONNERS FERRY — Engines revved and dirt flew, as dirt bikes and their riders defied gravity, negotiating the custom track at the Boundary County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 29.
The 9B Arenacross began with the desire to see dirt bike racing return to Boundary County and north Idaho.
“Our goal is to encourage and promote growth within the sport while also providing a large scale entertainment event for the community,” states their website, 9Barenacross.com.
They appeared to reach their goal, as the stands were packed with people by the time the event began. Having so many hometown competitors kept the crowd cheering for their favorites, or just a whoop or holler for a particularly high jump or twist in midair.
With many different categories and age groups, all types of riders — from beginners to advanced — found a way to have fun on the course.
The team that puts on the event is working on additional intermission activities to keep the crowd lively. They are also working on a revised ticket process that will allow entry into both the pits and general seating for next year’s competition.
This year’s Arenacross brought in a total of 142 registrations, with the pro class bringing in five racers who compete nationally.
The winner, Ryan Breece of Athol, finished 14th in the last three rounds of the Monster Energy Supercross Series. Chris Howell, Devin Harriman, Collin Jurin and Chance Blackburn also race nationally.
“We had a dozen racers or better from Canada, and others from western Montana and Eastern Washington,” said Event Promoter John Becker.
