100 Years Ago

The B.F. Herald begins its 29th year today. It was founded by S.D. Taylor and has had only 2 owners.

Three autos loaded with gypsies passed through town this morning. The women hit out in different directions to make expenses for the day by telling fortunes. One woman became a bit free with the pocketbook of Dad Lyons and a couple of his bills stuck to her fingers. Lyons immediately complained and the woman was arrested, made to give back his bills, and also fined $25. The gypsies then immediately left town.

C.H. Bixler, proprietor of Bonner Bakery, has installed a new Champion bread mixer, which is run by electricity and mixes all the dough quickly and thoroughly. Mr. Bixler is now turning out on the average more than 320 loaves of bread in addition to a large number of cakes and pies.

50 Years Ago

Mr. & Mrs. James Burkholder of B.F. have received word that their son, 1st Lt. James Burkholder has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying in support of ground forces fighting in Vietnam. Up to this time Lt. Burkholder had flown 120 missions since going to Vietnam.

Allan MacDonald of Bonners Ferry participated in the old-time fiddlers contest in the Smelterville Frontier Days, and came home with 1st place.

The Grand Masonic Lodge of Idaho laid the cornerstone of the new B.F.H.S. located across the road from the National Guard Armory. High winds and gloomy weather resulted in a small turnout for the ceremony. A number of items were placed inside the hollow capsule of the stone, including: a copy of the school bond proposal, a copy of the program for the ceremony, and two B.F. Heralds.

15 Years Ago

The new high school is set to be completed by October 31, right on schedule.

Heavy rains have wiped out Myrtle Creek — water rationing may be implemented.

Workers put the finishing touches on downtown by planting trees on the new sidewalks. This completes the revitalization project.

A Bonners Ferry team won the 6 foot and under high school division at the Spokane Hoop-fest.
