Cornhole tournament sees great turnout

BONNERS FERRY — Fourteen teams gathered at Riverside Auto Center on July 13, as part of the Kootenai River Days, to test their skills at the game of cornhole, where a team of two players took turns tossing bags of plastic resin at a raised platform, aiming for the hole at the far end.
Play began at 1 p.m. and lasted for about four hours, as the teams battled it out for the top spot. At the end, two teams remained: locals Bob and Jeanne Racer, and a team from Spokane, Wash., Kevin and Beth Cunningham. The Cunninghams found the tournament by chance.
“We typed in ‘things to do around the area,’ because we are at Silverwood, and this popped up,” said Beth Cunningham. “We decide to drive up and try it out.”
The two teams played hard while the audience watched, whooped, and hollered, as the players took turns chucking the bags at the platforms. In the end, the team from Spokane took the win, having more experience than the self-proclaimed amateur team that mostly just played in their backyard.
The event drew a larger-than-expected crowd of players and spectators, and the proceeds from the event went to the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce.
“Everything turned out good,” said organizer Josh Hawks. “The turnout was more than what we expected.”
