100 Years Ago

W.C. Hendricks of Porthill and Elizabeth Crone of Nebraska were wed last evening. They will make their home at Porthill, where the groom owns a ranch.

Mr. and Mrs. James Carey of McArthur were burned out last Tuesday when their house caught fire from sparks from a forest fire.

An explosion from a lamp destroyed the home and barn of E.E. Tomlinson on Thursday; that property being 18 miles east of town on the National Parks Highway was partly covered by insurance.

Patrons of School Districts #8, 9, 16, and 19, all in the Porthill area, are meeting to discuss consolidating the schools. There is some opposition from local residents because of the distances to be traveled and the roads in the winter. There is a good 2 room school building in Porthill that could be used for the consolidation.

A meeting has been set to discuss the value of an Agricultural Extension Service.

The Grand Opening of DeHart’s Drug Store on Main Street is set for this weekend. It is the former Wickstrom’s Drug and has had a “face lifting” inside.

The County Commissioners report that effective Tuesday the water level has subsided to the point where it is possible to reopen the Deep Creek Low Level Bridge to traffic.

An early afternoon fire that triggered four foot flames from a back-up generator at the Kootenai River Inn forced the evacuation of the Inn’s guests and employees Monday. There were no injuries and the fire was confined to the compartment containing the generator.

The Boundary County Airport is flying high after receiving a $1.127 million grant for a new parallel taxiway that will make their facilities safer and more efficient.

There was a gala parade under blue skies as the streets of downtown Bonners Ferry were officially opened up on Saturday after a three month, $1.3 million revitalization project that gave the city a sweeping makeover.

Seating is limited so get your tickets early for the premier sneak preview of the new movie: “Benji, Off the Leash” coming to the Rex Theater on August 2 at 2pm. All proceeds benefit Second Chance Animal Adoption.
