Spaghetti feed to benefit Kana is Saturday at South Boundary Fire

| March 7, 2019 12:00 AM

Makana Zito Hashimoto (Kana) moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, in 2013 with his grandmother. Kana was diagnosed with autism at an early age and has been raised by his grandmother since then. In late summer 2018, Kana’s aunt Dawn moved to Bonners Ferry due to a divorce and came to live with her mother and nephew.

In November Kana’s grandmother ran into cardiac issues and was in the hospital in Spokane until she passed away on Nov. 29. This was a big blow to both Kana and Dawn. Dawn was the backup person to take over with Kana if anything happened to the grandmother, she hired a lawyer to deal with the estate and realized there was not enough money to pay the bills.

On Dec. 26 Dawn took her own life. Kana is now on his own and any of his grandmother’s things, home, etc. are tied up in the estate. Kana is 25 years old and cannot look after himself without help. Kana needs to raise some money to be able to move out of the home so it can be cleaned and sold to pay off debts and hopefully purchase a smaller home in town.

People have asked why is he not put into a group home, well most of Kana’s friends can tell you that would not be an environment that would work well for him. Anyone that knows Kana can tell you he has great talents and is a wealth of information. Hopefully with support Kana can lead a happy and productive life in Boundary County Idaho.

The South Boundary Firefighters Association and the Helping Hands of Idaho are teaming up to put on a free spaghetti dinner for Kana. The cost per plate is by donation. The dinner is 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at South Boundary Fire Station No. 1, at 20 Schoolhouse Road in Naples. Please come down for some spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and corn and help Kana’s cause.

We are also looking for donations of time to help clean up and touch up the home to prepare for the sale.

If you have any questions or would like to assist, please contact Tony at 208-290-2613.
