Alternative to suet
An alternative to suet
This recipe is for the birds!
With the weather has been so cold I thought I would help the birds with this recipe I have found useful in the past few weeks. I save all the fat and fat drippings from my recipes and make blocks for the birds. I use inexpensive plastic containers to freeze the mix in. The blocks have been disappearing quick with this weather. This costs less than the store bought suet and the birds like it better.
1 cup lard or any fat you have from your meats
1 cup chunky peanut butter
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups oats
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup ground corn
1/2 cup unsalted peanuts
Melt the lard and peanut butter, then add the remaining ingredients. Mix well. Spoon into containers and freeze. There are containers you can get at the grocery store that are just the right size to slip into the suet feeders.
