100 Years Ago

George R. Gray, owner of the Gray Block occupied by L.N. Brown’s Dept Store and the Commercial Hotel on the second floor announced that he is adding a 3rd story to the building to give the hotel more space. It is expected to cost several thousand dollars.

The clocks go ahead 1 hour under the Daylight Saving Plan at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 30. The change can be made with the least inconvenience if people will just adjust their clocks on Saturday evening before retiring. The extra hour will be lost in sleep the next morning. It will continue until the last Sunday in Oct.

Wm. Warwick experimented last Friday with the feasibility of dragging the streets with a harrow to make them dry up faster. It was so successful on Railroad Ave. that he undertook to have the same treatment accorded to Main Street and paid for the work with money raise by subscription among businessmen.

Mrs. Caroline Flood, County Superintendent of schools, announced that the Inland Empire Teachers Assoc. will hold a banquet at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane next week. Any teacher may make a reservation now- plates are $1.

A gas explosion at Three Mile Café injured 2. The explosion happened in the kitchen area. Mrs. Herman Sloot, who is one of the owners, was taken to the hospital with “flash burns” and is reported to be satisfactory. Tom Tompkins was treated for minor burns.

An article in the March issue of Better Homes and Gardens lists the “Seven best trout fishing spots in the U.S. and Canada.” Topping the list is the Moyie River in Boundary County.

At a meeting between city and state officials, it was agreed that the state would pay $80,000 and the city will pay $40,000 to move the city utilities in preparation for construction of the by-pass scheduled for fall.

The new City Fire Chief was appointed. Larry Owsley will replace Ron Kish, who resigned.

The local Eagles Club has raised $320 for the Restorium.

Emily Eberle and Jacob Barrows took home four medals at the Idaho Academic Decathlon.

The new Bonners Ferry High School building will be completed in 6 months.
