Badgers track teams send 18 to state meet
SPIRIT LAKE — The top four in individual events and top two relays at the 3A district track meet qualified for the 3A state track meet at Middleton, Idaho, Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18.
Junior Abigail Gorton won both the 1600 (5:31.53) and the 3200 (12:17.17) at the district meet, held at Timberlake High School, and is seeded first in both for the state meet.
Sophomore Holly Ansley defended her titles from last year and repeated as district champion in long jump with a jump of 16-1 and the triple jump with a leap of 33-11.
Junior Victoria Rae was first in disc at districts with a toss of 126-03 which is seeded first at state, and finished second in the shot at districts with a put of 39-8.5, also seeded second at state.
Senior Jerzie Pluid defended her title as well winning the high jump by clearing 4-8.
Sophomore Emma Pinkerton won the 400 meter run with a time of 1:01.9 and qualified on two relays. Pinkerton teamed up with junior Jennifer Schmitz, freshman Camille Ussher and sophomore Madi McIntyre to place second in the 4x400 in 4:15.71 which is also seeded second at state. Pinkerton, Schmitz and Ussher will join freshman Morgan Burt on the 4x200 relay which also placed second with a finishing time of 1:50.81.
Camille Ussher also qualified individually placing third in the 400 (1:03.08).
Freshman Chloe Kupper placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:28.49 and sophomore Marianne Pinkerton qualified by placing fourth in the pole vault clearing 7-6.
The top four teams earn trophies at the 3A state track meet with a total of 19 teams participating.
“Our girls are young, so the future looks bright,” said Coach Travis Hinthorn. “I think our girls have a shot at a trophy. It looks like Kimberly and Gooding will be battling out for first and second. Sugar-Salem, Timberlake and Bonners will be competing for the next two trophies. It all depends on the day and who does well. That’s why you play the game.”
On the boys side Bonners Ferry had six qualifiers.
Junior Jake Jelinek placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-8, and fourth in the triple jump, jumping a personal best of 37-10.
Freshman Quinn Tucker also qualified in two events, placing second in the shot put, with a season best put of 46-2.5, and fourth in the disc, throwing 119-07.
Freshman Conner Alexander placed second in the 3200 (10:46.26) and senior Alex Alverez (53.94) and junior Justin Mendanhall (54.85) placed second and third in the 400.
Aeden Carpenter was the lone boys district champion, winning the pole vault with a personal best vault clearing 11-6.
