100 Years Ago

The Panhandle Tire Shop is a new business opening in the Casey Hotel Building. W.F. Shively and M.F. Maddux, proprietors, have purchased the vulcanizing equipment of the Crescent Garage and will be equipped to inflate a tube to the proper pressure and retread tires.

A lot of property has been sold in the past week. Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Amos bought a residence from A.C. Moore. Leslie Richardson bought a home from H.L. Medbury on Lot 2, block 6 of Bonners Ferry. Ivar Wallen from Helena, Montana purchased property from Mrs. John Webb. Mr. Wallen is a tailor and is employed at J.A. Walden’s store. A.C. Mayfield from the Katka district purchased a 160 acre ranch from C.D. Simonds.

Dr. E.E. Fry, Health Officer announced that all outhouses, barns, etc. in B.F. must be thoroughly cleaned up and put in a sanitary condition before his inspection in 10 days.

J.B. Brody and Wyman Hoagland have secured the Paige Auto Agency for Bonner and Boundary Co. Mr. Charles O’Callaghan has already purchased their first car.

A.B. Ashby, station agent for the Great Northern Railway, reports that daily freight service from Spokane, which was discontinued during the war, has been resumed.

50 Years Ago

Lance Corporal Robert Hansen, 20, of Naples, was killed in action in Vietnam on May 10 while serving in the Marine Corps. Hansen graduated from BFHS in 1965 and entered the Marines about 18 months ago. Cpl. Hansen is the first Boundary County serviceman killed in Vietnam.

The Kootenai River is continuing to rise and is expected to reach 30 feet on Friday and then start falling off due to cooler temperatures. The Army Corps of Engineers have signed up approx. 60 local people who are willing to help fight the flood if needed. They have a supply of 40,000 sandbags available and 35 pieces of heavy equipment from local sources can be used.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Neumayer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a reception at the United Methodist Church.

An M and O levy for Boundary County School District passes by 11 votes.

Larry and Judy Dirks’ classic 65 year old Resettlement era barn with its Gothic arch got new shingles on its 2,700 square foot surface.

Boundary Community Hospital has a new Chief of Staff for 2004/2005, Chuck Newhouse, M.D.

After 30 years of operating Anderson Logging, Shirley and Oscar Anderson have opened Idaho Granite Works.
